Yes, you may install WellTracking on your desktop and laptop and apply one Single license for both installations, but not use on both machines at a time. Doing this, please, note that Single license applies only to your exclusive use and cannot be transferred to other users.

No, by the moment we do not have such licensing for WellTracking.

You can get a volume discount only when you purchase two or more licenses at a time.
So, you will need to pay full price for your third WellTracking license.

You can renew your maintenance while your current maintenance is still valid, or not more than three months after your current maintenance is expired. There is a quantity discount for users renewing their maintenance period for next two or more years simultaneously. For example,
you can get discount for maintenance renewal, if you:

  • renew maintenance for next two years for one license
  • renew maintenance for two different licenses at a time (one year per each license).

Users with maintenance expired three or more months ago, need to reinstate their maintenance, which means to pay the respective reinstatement fee for missed period (including the current year) of maintenance to have access to all newer WellTracking versions. Note that quantity discounts are not available in case of purchasing reinstatement for expired maintenance.

Maintenance validity period automatically starts right after your license is given to you and lasts during one calendar year (or years, if you purchased several years of maintenance at a time).

As a rule, purchasing maintenance renewal and reinstatement is made on a yearly basis.
But in some cases it is possible to purchase maintenance for shorter periods (months or even days). For example, if you have purchased multiple licenses throughout the course of a year,
we can provide a single maintenance renewal quote with a common maintenance term for all
these licenses. Address to our support team support@dataeast.com, if you need to get such
complex quote.

WellTracking license can be activated not more than two times.

No, you don’t. In order not to lose your current active license, you need to deactivate it before replacing your computer. Address to our support team at support@dataeast.com to request deactivation. After deactivation you can activate your license once again with your key.

This message means that you are trying to activate your license the third time. Pay attention, WellTracking Single license permits software operations on one computer for one user only. You may also activate your license on your laptop computer, but not use on both machines at a time.

From our experience, in most cases there are following common reasons for that:

  • WellTracking version installed on your machine and your WellTracking license key version do not match. In this case install the required WellTracking version or consider upgrading your license key.
  • You are entering registration information incorrectly. Enter the key carefully as provided in the email from us, it is recommended to use copy/paste operation to avoid typos.

To add WellTracking toolbar to ArcMap, go to Customize tab and select Toolbars item.
In the appeared toolbars list check the box near WellTracking.

After installation the WellTracking toolbar will be added to the ArcMap toolbar.

Same as with ArcMap you can always customize appearance of your WellTracking toolbar
by adding/deleting any tool. To do so select Customize Mode... in Customize menu in ArcMap
and then select WellTracking item in Commands tab.

Select the tool you want to add to the WellTracking toolbar in the right part of the dialog and just drag it to your WellTracking toolbar.

To install WellTracking geoprocessing tools, create a new toolbox and follow the next steps:

  1. Add ArcToolbox window to ArcMap or ArcCatalog by pressing the ArcToolbox window button on ArcMap or ArcCatalog toolbar.

  2. Right-click ArcToolbox and select Add Toolbox option.

  3. WellTracking Geoprocessing toolbox locates in the installation folder (C:\ProgramFiles (x86) \DataEast \WellTracking). Add the required toolbox to the dialog.

Save ArcToolbox settings either to file or to default (Save Settings> To Default).

Yes, click here.

  1. . Create WellTracking geodatabase. At first it is required to create geodatabase with specific structure. The geodatabase is created with standard ArcGIS tools, and the geodatabase structure is specified with the Edit geodatabase structure tool (in the Geodatabases management menu).

  2. Log in. The first system login is made under the administrator name without password.

  3. Specify default parameters. The default parameters will be used for work of the most WellTracking tools. For example, setting coordinate system will help you to work with the Reports tool group. If you specify the default buffer zone for the wellbore, you will get warning messages indicating the wellbores, which buffer zones would be crossed by the project wellbore.

To specify default parameters, go to Administration menu. Only after setting default parameters you can start creating drilling features in your geodatabase.

  4. Add your data to WellTracking geodatabase. Note that WellTracking geodatabase has a hierarchical structure where all features are sub-elements of higher level objects. So, first
you need to create objects in the following order:

    License area-> Field->Formation -> Pad ->Well sequence -> Target-point ->
Wellhead -> Wellbore geometry -> Formation intercepts.

WellTracking geodatabase has a hierarchical structure, where wellheads are sub-elements of higher level objects (see 10. About WellTracking geodatabase structure). So, first of all you need to create objects in the following order: license area, field, formation, pad, well sequence, target-point (project bottom hole). Then you need to tie target-point to the pad and only after that create new project wellhead on the well sequence.

For work with this type of data you will need the "Load archive wells" tool. Change the tool settings in the "Change configuration" dialog (“Administration” tool group).

If you did not succeed to create formation intercepts on well path, check the settings in “Units recalculation” section in the “Change configuration” dialog (“Administration” tool group).

To specify settings:

  1. Go to Administration-> "Coordinate systems administration" and specify geographic and projected coordinate systems you use for work (system coordinate of your map and geodatabase).
  2. Open the “Change configuration” dialog again and specify the required settings by selecting coordinate system you have just specified.

If after setting this parameter the problem still exists, address to our support team at support@dataeast.com. In your support request please make sure to specify your WellTracking version and describe sequence of your operations that result in the error providing as many details as possible.

You can add any depth value, including the average depth of formation. Afterwards, for example when creating the target-point, you can manually edit the depth of the selected formation, which will correspond to specific location of project bottom hole.

WellTracking geodatabase has certain predefined structure, that is why all objects created other than with WellTracking tools, will not be automatically integrated in this structure. For example, WellTracking will not be able to use license area created in ArcMap to create formation.

This problem can be solved as following:

  1. Create shapefile or new feature dataset in your WellTracking geodatabase and digitize it using standard ArcMap tools. Then select “Create license area” tool and then “From the map layers” option to copy its geometry. The resulted license area will have the appropriate geometry and so will be implemented in the WellTracking structure.

  2. The “By entering the nodes coordinates” option of the “Create license area” tool is provided to either digitize object by entering its nodes coordinates with the mouse click, or to create the object using its coordinates copied from the corresponding xls-table.

WellTracking geodatabase has strict hierarchy structure, where all objects are related with each other. So, you cannot delete any high-level object without deletion of its sub-objects first. At that, to delete pad area you should delete all wellheads with wellbore geometries and target-points, and well sequences created on this pad area. Such logic prevents accidental deletion of geodatabase objects.

The attribute table of TARGET-POINT layer does not have WELL_NUMBER field, that could be used to display numbers of wells on the map. There are no common fields in attribute tables of WELL and TARGET-POINT layers which could be related. So we need to find a table to connect these two attribute tables. WELLBORE layer has such table with WELLBORE_ID field, which is also present in WELL and TARGET_POINT layers. Therefore, we need to relate these tables twice. First, we relate TARGET_POINT and WELLBORE tables using WELLBORE_ID and relate WELL layer table using WELL_ID. Only then we can specify the WELL_NUMBER field with wells numbers that will be shown on map.

  1. Check whether WELLDATA_HISTORY feature dataset exists in your geodatabase structure. In case it doesn’t, update the structure using the “Edit geodatabase structure” tool (“Data managements” toolset).

  2. Check whether the required settings in “Save objects Change history” in “Objects editing” section are enabled (“Configuration change” toolset).

Feel free to inform us about any found bugs at support@dataeast.com. Please describe the problem providing as many details as possible. Do not forget to mention your WellTracking
and ArcGIS versions (and service packs, if any).

Yes, we recommend first to uninstall the previous version and then install the newer WellTracking version. You can uninstall WellTracking from the Add or Remove Programs menu (or Programs and Features), available from the Control panel.

No, the current WellTracking 6.1 version is compatible with ArcGIS 10.x versions only.
The previous WellTracking 5.0 and earlier versions can be installed and used with ArcGIS 9.3.

The geodatabase is the native data structure for ArcGIS and is the primary data format used for editing and data management.

Using geodatabase format for work with WellTracking data seems to be the most optimal due to following reasons provided below.

The geodatabase can be used as a common storage not only for spatial data obtained after drilling, but for other relevant information and tables. At that the data can be stored on server or locally on your computer.

WellTracking geodatabase contains:

  1. WELLDATA feature dataset with drilling data and WELLDATA _HISTORY feature dataset with information about all changes made with drilling features;

  2. Attribute tables of formations and fields;

  3. Service tables WellTracking settings;

  4. System tables with relationship classes.

All spatial features in geodatabase have spatial reference that can be specified for each feature class separately or for group of features if they are stored in the feature dataset. The feature datasets WELLDATA and WELLDATA_HISTORY have the same coordinate system. Thus, new drilling features created with WellTracking tools will be automatically created in the same coordinate domain.

Working with geodatabase allows to keep the integrity of all your data. You will not be able to create any drilling feature in the WellTracking geodatabase that is not provided by its structure.

In geodatabase, you can set specific rules for your spatial features. For example, relationship rules for features allow limiting number of features participating in the relationship. That said, you can set the rule, so that one well could have only one catwalk, one wellbore geometry – multiple formation well tops, etc.

The geodatabase can store large volume of data which is extremely important for work with fields consisting of thousands of wellbores.

Purpose-specific WellTracking geodatabase has predefined interdependent structure of hierarchical data.

This structure is optimal for work with information, as any requested data can be quickly found.

Besides, such structure allows to maintain data integrity. All input data is verified, i.e. only specific types data provided by the structure can be added to your geodatabase.

The geodatabase structure can be viewed either in ArcCatalog

or in Catalog (ArcMap).

In ArcMap, you will be able to view feature datasets WELLDATA and WELLDATA_HISTORY,
as well as relationship classes.

There are following options to create geodatabase in WellTracking:

  • Use sample geodatabase with predefined structure. To do so, go to C:\Program Files (x86) \DataEast\ WellTracking and copy SampleDatabase.en.mdb to your disc. After that go to “Geodatabases management” tool group, run “Edit geodatabase structure” tool and change coordinate system of sample geodatabase, if required. The new geodatabase is ready for work.

  • Or contact us at support@dataeast.com with request to create the geodatabase based on your parameters.

This operation is available for users of ArcGIS for Desktop Standard or Advanced levels only.

If you have ArcGIS Basic license installed, you need either to consider upgrading it to Standard level or contact us at support@dataeast.com with request to update your geodatabase.
